Dissonance, sex and noise: (Re)Building (Hi)Stories of Electroacoustic Music
نویسنده
چکیده
This article presents a reflection on some ideological problems that surround the creation of a history of electroacoustic music. The analysis of the role and evolution of a musical concept through the history of a musical tradition can show the strategies used in the creation of a historical narration. As an example of these rhetoric devices, the article briefly tracks the presence of dissonance and noise in diverse musical traditions through the last century. Thus, two parallel historical narrations are presented. Some apparent differences between them are questioned when the concepts of dissonance and noise are regarded as ‘the other’ for each respective musical tradition. An analogy connecting music and sex (as different ways for contacting ‘the other’) is also discussed. The concept of ‘the other’, standing for what is and must be usually hidden and repressed, works as a limit for the identity of any ideological construction, including the Western subject. The analysis of ‘the other’ and how it is repressed or emancipated can therefore reveal important aspects of the identity of a musical tradition.

Development of the adaptive music perception test.
OBJECTIVES Despite vast amounts of research examining the influence of hearing loss on speech perception, comparatively little is known about its influence on music perception. No standardized test exists to quantify music perception of hearing-impaired (HI) persons in a clinically practical manner. This study presents the Adaptive Music Perception (AMP) test as a tool to assess important aspec...
متن کاملStria by John Chowning: Last Improvements
Since my first paper about Stria (Computer Music Journal, 31:3, 2007), a lot of adjustements have been made in the reconstruction of the piece. I started this project in 2006, which was just achieved for the re-premiered in Paris, at the concert “Musique et Complexité” held by Nicolas Darbon and Jean-Claude Risset, at the CDMC-Cité de la Musique, the 11 December, 2008. Stria (1977) – as most of...
متن کاملEffects of learning on dissonance judgments
Background in music cognition: A frequently posed question regards the origins of the aversion most listeners have to dissonant sounds. In the domain of psychology, attempts to address this question have included examining how early similar biases may be found in infants as well as whether they exist at all in non-human species. In contrast, another line of work has, rather than focusing on pot...
متن کاملCross-Modal Perception of Noise-in-Music: Audiences Generate Spiky Shapes in Response to Auditory Roughness in a Novel Electroacoustic Concert Setting
Noise has become integral to electroacoustic music aesthetics. In this paper, we define noise as sound that is high in auditory roughness, and examine its effect on cross-modal mapping between sound and visual shape in participants. In order to preserve the ecological validity of contemporary music aesthetics, we developed Rama, a novel interface, for presenting experimentally controlled blocks...
متن کاملBroadening Telematic Electroacoustic Music by Affective Rendering and Embodied Real-time Data Sonification
Often played in traditional music performance formats, much recent telematic electroacoustic music focuses on the relationships between people/machines and geographically distributed cultures/spaces/players, and/or it adopts electroacoustic music’s historical concerns with natural environmental sound art or space manipulation. But a more suitable environment for telematic art works is perhaps f...
